As a fan of Doctor Who, I’ve always been fascinated by the TARDIS** – the iconic time machine that takes the Doctor on his adventures through time and space. So when I wanted to create a unique project for my grandkids, building a TARDIS seemed like the perfect idea.
So, I’m thinking: Why not build a Time Machine out of cardboard?
Building the TARDIS:
The TARDIS was built roughly 1/2 scale from a large cardboard box. It stands 48 inches high. To create the windows and interior, I used recycled materials like plastic election signs. To create the exterior panels, I glued balsa wood strips. After priming the TARDIS, I painted it dark blue, and added “Public Call Box” decals purchased from ETSY.
Making it Feel Bigger on the Inside:
One of the challenges I faced was how to make it feel bigger on the inside. To achieve this, I used acrylic mirror tiles to create a "mirror box" effect reflection that makes the TARDIS interior seem much larger than it actually is. Additionally, I built a partial console inside the TARDIS and added LED lighting to bring it to life.
